Grade 7 students in the Individuals & Societies (I&S) class with Ms. June Caulfield worked on a project titled: "A Walk Back in Time". The project involved students studying about Medieval Society. They ended their study of this topic with this Design Project where created shoes out of scrap material, designed in Medieval Period style. Students had a week during their regular I&S classes to work on their designs and creations. After the building period, students brought their Medieval Shoes to their I&S classroom and we took one more I&S class day to work on the durability test of the shoes as well as evaluating the designs and performance. For each 45-minute I&S block, students were given the following activities:

Here's our Songdo Monument Project — MYP Unit Plan (PDF)
The Songdo Monument Project came to a close on November 16, 2016 when we held our afternoon exhibition in the MS/US Atrium. Special guests from IFEZ, parents, students and teachers attended the event. Grade 7 students were dressed up for their big day as they presented their architectural firms, their design processes and their final products. We have a few videos of the event and student projects as well as videos on the process — site visit and measurements. We are working on a Book Trailer — based on the Grade 7 reading: "A Step from Heaven". THE DESIGN CHALLENGE IS: "How do get text to appeal to a wider audience?" THE GOAL (Summative Task) IS: Create a 60-second Book Trailer about the book, "A Step from Heaven" using Powtoons. Here's the process to follow:
FORMATIVE TASK: Create a very brief Powtoon video using the Humpty-Dumpty story or any other story you'd like to use. This formative exercise will allow you to "play" with Powtoons to discover what it can do. Also, if you have any technical issues, this is the time to fix them before you work on your summative task. Here's the process to follow:
As part of the Songdo Monument Project, we visited the site — the specific place in Songdo Central Park where students propose to build the monument. They made measurements and estimated the area and height of their future monuments. They also noted the surrounding areas and the environment. Last Wednesday, October 19, we had a special gathering in the Black Box Theater to formally announce and present the Math & Design Integration Project. The "Songdo Monument Project" is a challenge for Grade 7 students to design a monument for the city of Songdo. They will then create a 3D print from the design or use cardboard and paper to create a small model of their proposed monument design. Throughout the project, students will be using mathematical concepts they study through their Math classes. Below is a short video recap of the Kick-off afternoon. |
